The Russian Tourist Visa Invitation, Explained

Almost every first-time traveller to Russia hits the same wall: the consulate asks for an "invitation", but it is not obvious what that means or where it comes from. This guide clears it up.

What the tourist invitation actually is

A Russian tourist invitation is made up of two documents — a Tourist Voucher and a Confirmation of Receipt of a Foreign Tourist. Both are issued by a Russian tour operator that is registered with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and holds a federal registry (reference) number.

The consulate uses these documents to confirm that a recognised Russian organisation is accountable for your visit. That is the whole purpose — it is an accountability record, not a hotel booking.

Do I need to book a hotel first?

No. This is the single biggest misconception. The voucher is accepted by consulates on its own; you do not have to pre-pay a specific hotel to obtain it. You are free to change your accommodation plans afterwards.

How long does it take?

An electronic tourist invitation is typically issued within minutes and delivered as a PDF by email. You print it and attach it to your visa application.

What to check before you submit

• Your name matches your passport exactly (Latin spelling).
• Passport number and dates are correct.
• Entry and exit dates cover your planned trip.
• The reference and confirmation numbers are present.
