Russian visa glossary
The vocabulary of Russian visas, defined in plain English.
- Letter of Invitation (LOI)
- An official document confirming that a Russian organization or person invites you. It is mandatory for most Russian visa types and is what we issue.
- Visa Support
- The full service of preparing and registering the documents (invitation/voucher) a consulate requires to grant a Russian visa.
- Tourist Voucher
- Part of the tourist invitation: a confirmation of tourist services issued by a registered Russian tour operator.
- Confirmation of Receipt
- The companion document to the tourist voucher confirming a foreign tourist has been accepted; both are registered with the Russian MFA.
- Telex
- An electronic invitation transmitted directly from the Russian MFA to a specific consulate, often used for business visas.
- MFA
- The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation, which registers invitations and oversees visa issuance.
- Single / Double / Multiple Entry
- How many times you may enter Russia on one visa: once, twice, or unlimited within the validity period.
- Consular Fee
- The fee charged by the Russian consulate for processing your visa, separate from the invitation cost.
- Migration Card
- A small form completed on arrival in Russia; keep the stamped half until you leave the country.
- Registration
- Notifying the Russian authorities of your stay address within 7 working days of arrival, usually handled by your hotel or host.
